Course Overview

Did you know that of the top one hundred grossing films of 2019, women represented 10.7% of directors? Films by women have been being made and yet they are rarely given the same platform or distribution opportunities as those by male directors. The aim of this course is not just to analyse these films, but also to celebrate them! What are the different nuances in filmmaking that can be identified just by merit of it being told through the female gaze? The structure of the course will be that the students are required to watch the films allocated to each class in advance. To begin each class, there will be a short 'lecture' about the context in which the film was made and how shifts within the industry and popular society, as well as technological advances, enabled these films to be made. Students will be encouraged to consider what these films are able to reveal to a modern viewer, about the time in which the film was created and the lens through which the story is told. The latter portion of the classes will be largely discussion-based, with some in-depth analysis of scenes from the films being discussed - how does the composition of the shot affect the audience? What is the audience being told through the mis-en-scene? There are so many subtleties that take place in the cinema, and this course will serve as a springboard to educate students on how to unpick them.
