Course Overview

This programme provides a broad introductory overview of some characteristics of the Medieval World. It examines both the institutional and mental framework in which society operated and features of everyday life and material culture. An ethnographic and descriptive approach will be prominent; the stress will be on the ways in which the medieval world differed from ours, though the course will also examine parallels and challenge the common assumption that society has necessarily progressed in every possible way. After this course, students will feel comfortable with the basics of Medieval Europe and the Middle Ages after we look at how beliefs, education, family and knighthood and how they contributed to society.
