Course Overview

This course is designed for adult learners who want to become more film literate. It explores film genres and important time periods in film history, approaching the film from both an analytical and an industry perspective. Notable auteurs and films will be subject to closer scrutiny but also the social and cultural contexts underpinning film production. Mainstream, independent and world cinema sectors will be understood in terms of film production, distribution and crucially audience consumption on a range of platforms. After this course, students will feel more comfortable understanding film form and film language as we journey through a series of chosen film genres to understand how they came to be and what makes them unique.
