This course is designed to give students an insight into the nature of language itself, as well as the varieties of language that exist around the world today (and in the past). It will give an overview of the sounds of human language, the different ways in which words and sentences can be structured in different languages, and the many ways meaning is encoded in grammar. There will be a brief introduction to modern syntactic theory, and an overview of how children acquire language, as well as an account of how languages change and develop over time. Students will learn transferable skills on this course such as analytical thinking and will furthermore develop a deeper understanding of how language came to be as it is today.
