Course Overview

Are you an avid hip hop fan, looking to further understand the complexities of the music, the dances and the art of the global subculture? Are you curious about cinema, filmmaking, and how hip hop has been used on-screen to invite audiences into worlds, often extremely distinct from their own? Then look no further! This course dives deeply into the visceral power of hip hop, charting its inception on the streets and subways of New York in the early 70s and its depiction on screen all the way from the wonder of 'Wild Style' to the majesty of 'Moonlight'. This is a course that is equally suitable for students who are music lovers or fanatical about film. It is not a requirement to have engaged with all the material prior to beginning the programme, as there are homework assignments set throughout, which involve watching films and listening to music.
