Course Overview

This programme is designed to look in closer depth at the history of the Middle East, and its inextricable link to the history of empire. It will examine the relevance of such questions to contemporary issues and take a longer-term view of the region as a whole. Rather than simply examining a specific country, approaching the Middle East in a more holistic way also allows for transnational understandings of the region, including links and histories that might not be as familiar to a modern student. This course will approach a period and area of history that is often hard to tackle and help provide a more nuanced and deeper understanding of some of the most dynamic questions in history. Along the way, there is plenty of space to practise source analysis in a range of media from texts to paintings to video, as well as core essay writing and argument skills. It is also highly useful to begin to question what, and indeed who, makes history!
