A close look at a range of theatrical genres, including naturalism, epic theatre and physical theatre. Students will be exposed to useful exercises, as well as engaging with examples to further their understanding of theatre genres.
Why is it that theatre pieces are presented in such different ways? What are the main genres that have influenced 21st-century theatre? Students will look at, analyse and understand some of the main theatrical genres: comedy, tragedy, melodrama, commedia dell'arte, naturalism, epic theatre and physical theatre. Our exploration will include watching snippets of live theatre and online examples, and the opportunity to try out practical techniques. Students will be able to make notes in logbooks, as well as research and share short presentations about findings that can be used to inform their drama learning and coursework. This programme supports GCSE and BTEC drama. By the end of the lesson series, students will feel very comfortable with a range of theatre genres, increasing their skills not only as actors but also theatre critics.
