Course Overview

This programme focuses on historical, as well as literary themes through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will discuss the analysis, interpretation and appreciation of the many aspects of British literature. By the end of the course, students will have developed a confident familiarity with the twentieth-century British literary scene, while also acquiring a firm grasp on the ways in which ideas can be communicated. Students will also be able to apply specific criteria, pertinent to the cultural context, to analyse and interpret primary literary texts of diverse background and genres. The programme begins with introductory notes on Modernism and Edwardian beginnings, and the challenges of the imperial world (Joseph Conrad). From there, students proceed to the poetry of the First World War and the art, politics, and history in W.B.Yeats‘ poetry, followed by T.S. Eliot and ‘Alienation of Modern Man.’ Students will touch upon the issue of finding a new perspective in poetry with the poetry of the Imagists (Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell) and discuss the modernist experimentation in prose of James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. The course wraps up with The British Empire in the writing of E.M. Forster, and Post-WWII Britain in the poetry of Philip Larkin.
