Teaching Experience

I have been teaching mathematics for 8 years now and I am a full-time maths Educator, with experience teaching all levels. In 2013, during my gap year, I began teaching privately to adults and children, including people with dyslexia. I had a few foundation level students who achieved a high C grade, two students who achieved a B grade from a C grade and 1 student who achieved an A grade from a C grade. During this year I also travelled to Guatemala to work at the Open Windows Foundation where I taught maths and English to children aged from 6 to 12. This gave me the opportunity to teach people in international environments and adapt my teaching style to benefit the students in the best way.

During my degree studies, I was a leader of a volunteering project where I organised activities and taught children who have siblings with disabilities. I was involved in this project for two years and held sessions on a monthly basis. I also interned at a school in Sheffield where I taught mathematics to year 7 up to year 11. I also held small group revision sessions whilst I was working there to assist children who were struggling in class. I would occasionally teach year 7 classes about mathematics in computer science within maths lessons. This was a way of showing the students some interesting applications of the subject and therefore encouraging students to engage with mathematics.

After completing my degree, I went to Taiwan to teach English. I lived in a different city with a different host family every two weeks. For each of the four camps, I prepared and delivered English lessons and activities. I then stayed in Taipei and taught English. This was a great experience where I learnt basic mandarin as well as improved my teaching style and methods.

From 2018 to the present, I have been teaching privately in Leicester and Nottingham, and have recently moved to London to continue teaching privately. I have a particular approach to building my students confidence and improving their grades. This includes doing past papers weekly which has worked well with all my students. All my students improved their marks on a weekly basis and developed their confidence in the subject too.

I find that many students feel uncomfortable asking for help as they feel they should know it already. This is where I would like to make changes and help make students feel comfortable enough to be able to ask for help and tell me if they struggle with some basic concepts. If the foundations are solid then advanced concepts become easier to grasp. It's important to me to increase my students' confidence in the subject as well as improve their grades.

About Annie K

I am someone who enjoys learning and trying new things. As well as being academic, I am also a creative person. I worked in software engineering as a tester in Nottingham. In my free time, I create traditional and digital art pieces. Teaching has always been something that comes naturally to me and I very much enjoy it. It is something I will keep doing for a long time because I like changing a student's perception towards mathematics and making them feel it's possible to achieve and do well in it (and you don't have to be a 'maths person' to do so). I also enjoy reading and learning about human psychology. I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts and watching videos on various psychology topics such as productivity, healthy relationships and more.
