About Helen H

I am a qualified teacher who loves helping people of all ages succeed in maths. I particularly enjoy working with children, young people and adults who find maths difficult, have specific learning needs or have English as their second language. After gaining a first-class degree in engineering, I worked for nine years in marketing-related roles in the UK manufacturing sector. In 2003, I started teaching maths because I wanted to share my love of learning and to help my students improve their skills and career prospects.

In 2006, I moved with my family from the UK to France for four years, where we learnt the language and my two children were able to experience a different education system. I took an online TEFL course and taught English for two years before moving to a British school to teach maths to IGCSE level. In 2010 we returned to the UK and I gained my Qualified Teacher Status, teaching in local secondary schools during my training and NQT years. I then returned to Bracknell to teach post-16 students. Many of my students are adults with jobs and young families; some have learning difficulties or mental health issues; all of them want to gain a maths qualification to move on to further study or change jobs. The classes are small and I find it very rewarding to see individuals grow in confidence and achieve a degree of success in maths that they never believed would be possible.

I first started teaching maths privately from home in 2010, gaining new students through referrals. As with my teaching at the college, I have particularly enjoyed working with students who find maths challenging and who benefit from having more individual support. As I am now seeking to expand my work as a private Educator, I am taking more active steps to find students.

My work in Bracknell has included teaching maths to teenagers who have only recently arrived in the UK. Some have experienced trauma and have received little education in their home countries. I teach those with very low levels of English, so have had to adapt my lessons to include the explicit teaching of maths vocabulary. It is a privilege to work with these students and help them learn the skills they need to build a successful life in the UK. I am passionate about learning and am always keen to discover new things about the world - languages, history, art, current affairs and politics. I speak and read French and have recently started learning Spanish. I am a member of a local church and lead a women's prayer and bible study group.

When I teach maths, I want to share with students my love of the subject and for learning in general. Most of all, I want to provide engaging, age-appropriate, targeted teaching that gives students the opportunity to succeed.
