Education & Relevant Experience

Teaching Experience

I am an experienced private Educator with nine years of teaching experience. My work has included a range of roles (in-person and online) teaching a range of ages and educational needs, including dyslexia. As a particular focus, I have worked one-on-one teaching GCSE-aged students in modern languages and younger pupils in a range of subjects from the KS2 curriculum. I have also taught foreign languages (including English as a foreign language) to adult learners. Furthermore, I have gained experience as a teaching assistant in a secondary school, providing additional learning opportunities to A-level and GCSE students in French and Spanish. My pedagogical style is informed by my Oxford University education and is centred around teaching as a dialogue between teacher and pupil, giving the latter ownership of their learning and empowering them to take academic leaps.

About Lydia W

Aside from teaching, I have a wide range of life experiences that enable me to empathise with my students and bring out the best in them. These experiences include travelling around the world and living in different cultures, such as in Russia and Nepal. I have also spent several months volunteering, including restoring a hiking trail in France and teaching English in the former Calais refugee camp.

My greatest passion is sports. For several years I trained and competed as a boxer, an experience that taught me about determination and how empowering the learning process and the dialogue between coach and athlete can be. Two particular highlights of my boxing career were winning the National Novice Championships and organising one of the country’s first all-female boxing events. Following this, I worked as the Oxford University Sports Federation President, a role designed for former students to make their mark on sport at the University. During my presidency, I oversaw the expansion of disability sports provision and welfare in the sports programme.

I believe very strongly in the impact of fostering confidence and enjoyment in the things we learn. I am a continuous learner, always striving to pick up a new hobby or learn a new DIY skill. I am a self-taught web designer and take great pleasure in learning to code, as well as picking up new languages. I aim to instil a similar joy of learning in my students.
