Teaching Experience

I began teaching music five years ago, initially teaching singing to a few private students and developing my practice to include guitar and music theory, both privately and through schools.

I currently teach singing at an academy. This involves providing one-on-one lessons for students aged 11-50, working on largely pop, musical theatre and classical repertoire and leading two choirs (one aged 7-10, the other aged 11-14), working towards end-of-term performances of ensemble musical theatre numbers. I have one student there who I am thrilled is going to study singing at The Leeds College of Music.

Through the Union Education Group platform, I provide one on one singing and guitar lessons for students aged 7-50+. Lessons often focus on preparing for ABRSM exams, performances and auditions (both amateur and professional). I have successfully prepared many students for ABRSM grades up to grade 8 and have quite recently had a professional student in the UK tour of Phantom of the Opera, covering the Phantom and Raoul.

I have also worked on several projects as a musical director, including Sam Bradshaw Productions 2018 Christmas shows, in which I taught and worked on the music of the show with professional singer-actors, working on performing the music with an energy and clarity to suit a young audience. My work with Royal Opera as a tenor section leader for their community choir is also something I am very proud of, this involved section leading in the choir itself, leading workshops on vocal technique and warming up for their performances of Monteverdi's 'Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria' at the Camden Roundhouse.

Since graduating, I have continued to develop my education career, teaching English to students of a variety of abilities and ages. In addition to this, I teach students in English privately and have successfully taken students through the IELTS exams for international study and work in the UK.

About Jack R

I am an enthusiastic, warm and diligent Educator with five years of teaching experience. I began my professional journey by studying classical opera at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which I obtained a first class degree in music. By the age of 21, I had already performed professionally in the UK and went on to leave college a term early to perform with Grange Park Opera and then as a soloist with West Green House Opera and Opera Loki.

For the last five years, I have maintained a successful teaching practice, beginning with a part-time private singing studio and moving into teaching English both to overseas students and privately, preparing students for the IELTS exams to a high success rate and giving elocution lessons. Recent successes in my teaching include a student gaining a place to study singing at the Leeds College of Music and a professional student performing in the UK tour of The Phantom of the Opera, covering the Phantom.

In addition to my private teaching, I have done outreach work for Royal Opera and the Camden Roundhouse Choir for young people, an experience which I found invaluable for gaining an insight into how young people work and learn together.

I believe that in order to get the best out of a lesson, a student must feel relaxed and uninhibited. It is for this reason that I always build a friendly relationship with all of my students and thus ensure a calm learning environment in which a student can work hard without feeling any excess pressure.

In my free time, I enjoy a regular meditation practice, the knowledge of which I have found to be very applicable to my teaching studio as cultivating a relaxed yet focused mind is vital to productive learning.
