Education & Relevant Experience

Teaching Experience

I currently teach a range of subjects at GCSE/A-level (English language and literature, film studies, history and geography) as well as teaching TEFL online. I lead a seminar at Newcastle University every week ('Film Theory' and 'Introduction to Documentary' recently) during term time, and I have been teaching many GCSE, IGCSE and A-level students (both individuals and groups) in the past few years. I also mark academic essays following university regulations and guidelines.

In my lessons, I offer exam preparation and revision, homework assistance, reviewing classwork and coursework, as well as general teaching of the curriculum and critical thinking and research/study skills. I also offer a History of Ideas course with several students. For this, we read political theory, philosophy, speeches, poetry, literature and essays, and discuss, critique and write about them in-depth.

I have taught English to several groups of Spanish teenagers at a learning centre. I prepared course material and created lessons on a variety of subjects and topics, balancing grammatical learning with conversations, writing and listening exercises.

In the past, I worked in Bologna, Italy as an English teacher, and during this time, I taught adults and children of all ages and levels. I taught at many multinational corporations as well as giving group and individual classes at my language institute. I especially enjoyed going into schools (primary, middle and high), meeting the children there and providing a fun but academically challenging course.

About Tom D

I'm currently studying for a PhD at Newcastle University. I'm studying part-time and so the rest of my week is spent teaching. The film I'm reviewing is called 'Brasilia of the North' and is about the legacy of T. Dan Smith's quest to reinvent Northeast England in the 1960s. I also write about Northeast England, and I have published several articles with LSE Review of Books, New European, BFI and Screen International.

This PhD brings both of my two passions together: history and film. I'm a part of both departments, and this allows me to engage in developments at the forefront of each field. My interest in history was kindled at Warwick, where I worked predominately on questions of film history (Nazi and Fascist propaganda, post-war Europe, 1980s Britain, the history of film criticism etc.) and continued into my master's research at Durham.

I have recently conducted archival research into the history of hospital provision in Northumberland and North Tyneside for Dr Dan Jackson's NHS Hospitals Project, analysing documents, minutes, newspaper articles, reports, statistics in local archives. I also interviewed him in front of a live audience about his book 'The Northumbrians' and recently delivered a talk to the senior military from the Royal College of Defence Studies entitled 'Northeast England: Past, Present and Future' (2019).

I was also a youth juror at Doc/Fest and on the BFI Film Critics' programme at London Film Festival 2018.
