Teaching Experience

After gaining my Level 5 qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, I have worked for over two years helping individuals of all ages improve their proficiency with the English language, using dynamic and personalised teaching strategies. I have taught in group settings with early learners, developing their literacy and ability to use language confidently, and I have successfully guided students through exams and coursework.

I am experienced at covering all things English and endeavour to engage and empower each student to spark their intellectual curiosity and help them to discover and apply their innate abilities. Alongside my work as a private Educator, I have delivered over 500 lessons online, ensuring that I am equally confident at providing quality teaching digitally as I am face-to-face.

About Charlie S

Perhaps above anything else, I am a curious person and love to learn about the world and the people within it. I read Anthropology at Bristol University for this reason, and I try to foster some of this curiosity in the students that I teach. After graduating, I moved to Madrid to fulfil a strong urge to learn another language to an advanced level and experience life within a foreign culture. Learning Spanish has helped me to take my understanding of my own language to new heights, and I am always looking for new ways to share this. I am a keen chess player and amateur boxer; these two hobbies are not as different as you might think! Aside from their strategic similarities, both rely on countless hours of dedication and repetition to train the brain; finding ways to keep learning fun is something I consider myself to be an expert in. I am a passionate actor and have recently accepted a place to train at Drama Studio London. Having spent much of my adolescence acting, I try to use my background in theatre to inspire and motivate in every lesson. I believe that it is crucial to allow yourself to follow as many interests as you can, and I encourage my students to do the same. Coming from a state school background, the Oxford application process was fairly daunting, but I benefited from some wonderful tuition for my ELAT and interview preparation. I am now very interested in this opportunity to pass on such useful knowledge to future applicants.

I achieved an A* in my English Literature A-Level, with full marks in two of my papers as well as 58/60 in my ELAT. I feel confident that I would therefore be able to help students perform their best in these exams. I am also very happy to give tours of Oxford colleges, libraries and the English faculty, and indeed to talk generally about dealing with the pressures of Oxford life in order to help tutees make informed decisions in their application.

In terms of extra-curricular during my A-Levels I was part of the Orange Tree Theatre Youth Company and with them performed on the Olivier Stage at the National Theatre as a result of winning the Connections Festival. In addition, I was runner up in the New Views playwrighting competition, meaning my play was performed in a dramatic reading by National Theatre actors.

Oxford's flourishing drama scene means I have continued to pursue these interests. I have acted in seven plays since coming to Oxford and this year set up my own theatre company and directed my first play at the Burton Taylor Studio.

I am also part of the Keble netball team and am Development Manager at Oxford's O'Reilly theatre. It is very important, I think, to take time out from the pressures of academic work, as well as making the most of the numerous opportunities that Oxford life offers. I am also involved with Keble at Large, a programme organised to encourage those from less privileged backgrounds to apply to Oxford - meaning I have practice in giving regular tours and talks.

Overall, I feel my experience to date shows my commitment to my subject and I would very much enjoy the opportunity to encourage and assist others along the same path.
