Fantastic Beasts and Where They Came From: The Historical and Mythological Origins of the Creatures of 'Harry Potter'
Beasts and creatures are an integral part of 'Harry Potter' and this course will take you on a full tour of all their magical wonder. Students will learn about all the creatures that feature in the story, as well as how they were conceived.
JK Rowling is famed for her inspired imagination in her creation of the rich world of 'Harry Potter', inventing an almost entirely new language and society that has been celebrated globally for over twenty years. But where does such inspiration come from? This course is designed to teach students all about how history, mythology and personal experience – and sometimes a combination of all three – were instrumental in creating the wizarding world we know and love today. By focusing on the magical creatures in the series, students will undertake effective comparisons of other literary texts featuring the same creatures; understand the (often blurred) boundaries between history and mythology, and perhaps even put some of these into practice in writing their own inspiring story.
