About Adam S

Initially a self-taught drummer, I started playing in 1995, almost immediately forming my own band and playing with other bands. I received lessons from a local teacher after playing for 2 years, which was my first exposure to how one-on-one lessons should (and should not) be delivered. In 1999 I went to university to study for a Bachelor of Arts in music performance, learning under master drummer Brian Clarke (percussionist in the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra) and illustrious faculty members like Darius Brubeck. I also started professional touring in 2000 and embellished my musical and recording knowledge with a professional sound engineering course in 2002-2003.

Following this, I spent time performing, touring and recording with various South African metal, rock, and pop bands between 2000 and 2006. I built a reputation as a session player who was able to learn material quickly and thoroughly. In 2005 I started teaching a small roster of private students from my home in Durban. I emigrated to the UK in 2006 to pursue band prospects, which ended in 2007. I entered full-time employment while still performing and taking on ad-hoc session gigs, and teaching a handful of private students.

In 2012 I completed a Bachelor of Science in photography and digital imaging, then returned to full-time employment as a copywriter until 2017. I gave private drum lessons while recording and performing throughout this period, during which I released several EPs and albums while touring the UK. In 2017 I was given a professional touring opportunity and decided to pursue drumming full time as a performer and educator. I was simultaneously employed by the Dan Tien Performing Arts School and Hertfordshire Music Service in 2018/2019 and started teaching across five schools. My private teaching practice grew simultaneously, and I built and opened a professional remote recording studio. The studio is equipped with audio and video capabilities.

I now teach over 40 students between my schools and private lessons (online and in-person) and have already put several beginner and intermediate students through grade 1, 2, 3, and 4 Trinity and Rockschool exams, each receiving high marks. I record professional drum tracks for a variety of clients and play with a professional function band - and I perform with an original rock band while recording and composing my own material (I am a singer, songwriter, and guitarist too).
