This course explores, in-depth, what life is like in an American ghetto. It mainly focuses on its urban geography and touches on the history of this particular concept.
What forces have combined to create the American ghetto? Across cities in the United States, segregation in urban areas continues to divide the population along racial lines. This course looks at what life is like in the ghetto, the role of public policy in creating these environments and how residents deal with the problems of poverty and stigmatisation. Predominantly focused on urban geography, this course will also touch upon the history of American cities alongside cultural studies. Students will develop their historical analysis skills and learn to synthesise complex information to write effectively during this course.
