How did a Georgian boy who grew up in poverty go on to become one of the most powerful men in the world? This course looks at the life of Joseph Stalin through the many epochs of the twentieth century that are intimately intertwined with his own life and career. Stalin, a ruthless and evil dictator, can be counted as one of Russia's greatest leaders who managed to industrialise the nation and turn it into one of the two global superpowers in the aftermath of the Second World War. Therefore, this course will study Stalin's life from childhood to his death and the legacy he left behind. By combining Marxism, power politics, geography and some psychology, this course offers a creative perspective on Russian history in the twentieth century.
