Course Overview

It is often said that Shakespeare gave some of his best roles to female characters and interestingly, at the time, female characters were all played by men. What does this tell us about Shakespeare? What influence did this have on perspectives on women at the time? This course takes a detailed look at some of Shakespeare's most notable female characters: who were they? How did he develop female characters? How were they restricted and how did they get past these restrictions? During this course, students will develop their contextual understanding, as well as have the chance to advance their evaluation and debating skills.
