The story of an exiled ruler who uses magic to restore his daughter to power argues that the powerful must show mercy. This text explores many complexities of human nature while pushing the boundaries of the imagination to take its audience on a fantastical, magical adventure. This course is aimed at students taking their English GCSE. Therefore, there will be a heavy focus on understanding the text within the structure of the AQA Assessment Objectives. Consistent work on understanding and developing critical responses to the text are vital in order to build confidence in the students to start putting their own personal responses and interpretations of the text forward. While in the exploratory part of the course, classes will hone skills in quote retrieval, close language analysis, comparing and contrasting skills and group debates. The final part of the course will approach skills in essay preparation where the students will have the opportunity to combine all the knowledge they have learnt and move forwards feeling confident in their ability to apply these skills to exam questions.
