skill-acquisition

Course Overview

This course will give students an overview of some of the key 20th century and contemporary theatre practitioners. Students will seek to understand more about the theatrical genres and contexts which influence their work and the connections between theory and practice. Students will explore genres such as Naturalism/Multi-media - Stanislavski/Katie Mitchell, Political/Epic Theatre - Bertolt Brecht, Theatre of the Oppressed - Augusto Boal, Immersive Theatre- Punch Drunk/Secret Cinema, Physical Theatre - Frantic Assembly/Complicite and Verbatim Theatre - Alecky Blythe/Nicholas Kent. Students will consider some of the following whilst diving into their work: the social, cultural and historical context in which the practitioner is/was working, theatrical purpose and practice, artistic intentions, innovative nature of their approach, working methods, theatrical style and use of conventions and collaboration with/influence on other practitioners.
