Course Overview



Much of the reading and writing material featured in this course is based on proficiency and TOEFL test courses. In the reading section, through a variety of topics, students shall be dealing with summarising, inferencing, comparing and contrasting, drawing conclusions, self-questioning, as well as relating to their own background knowledge. Students shall focus on the different reading techniques, such as understanding vocabulary from context, skimming, scanning, predicting, reading for specific information and reading for the gist. On a higher level, students shall dedicate some time to recognizing referents, finding factual information, understanding negative facts, inferring rhetorical facts, selecting summary information and completing schematic tables. The writing section will consist of activities to improve students’ writing by understanding model texts and how they are structured. They shall start from guided writing and move on to free writing, covering a wide variety of topics and introducing important stages of writing along the way, such as pre-writing, drafting, revising, proofreading and publishing. The forms will vary from short essays, reviews, reports, articles, stories, to different kinds of formal letters. As a result of great exposure and intense practice with complex sentences, students will additionally benefit from vocabulary enrichment and grammar in use.
