Course Overview

By the end of this course, students will have written out a short piece of music successfully in at least five different styles. The programme provides students with the foundations for writing for a variety of instruments and adapting each instrument to their given genre. The course opens itself out to further study and experimentation within each genre. Each week, there will be listening content for the student to work through, as well as specific tasks to complete. This is a chance for the student to discover their stylistic preferences and experiment with writing music in theoretical and practical ways. Knowledge of music theory is essential for this course, along with some musical knowledge or previous playing experience. It is preferred that the student has some experience with notation software such as Sibelius or Dorico. However, the notation paper and pencil is also suitable.
