Course Overview

An in-depth study of the rise of Mao, as the leader of China. Students will look at how he secured power for himself and the Communist Party in the first ten years, how he reformed the economy for better and worse, then at the Cultural Revolution which burnt China's Confucian history to the ground. Finally, students will consider major social changes across the time period before reviewing Mao as a whole. This course provides essential historical context surrounding Mao's life and his time in power and will furthermore give students a better understanding of how China came to be as it is today.
