On this course, students learn about the key factors that contributed to the birth of the Crusades, as well as the political, economic, intellectual and religious impact they had on Europe.
From the eleventh to the thirteenth century, the Crusades were a group of wars between Christian Europe and Islamic West Asia. The First Crusade was initiated over the fight for Christian pilgrim access to areas thought to be holy land. There were many different crusades thereafter. With the First Crusade being driven by religious drivers, subsequent ones took on more political reasons.
This course covers the establishment of the Crusader Kingdoms as a result of the First Crusade, the aims and importance of the First and Second Crusades during the early medieval period, as well as the developments in trade and science they brought about.
