Delve into the complex history of Anglo-Irish relations. By engaging with source material in close analytical detail, this course leaves students well-versed in the voices and arguments which surround this difficult history.
The ‘Irish Question’ had largely disappeared from the world’s consciousness after the historical Good Friday Agreement 1998, which ended most of the violence of the Troubles. Yet, the earth-shattering outcome of the Brexit referendum in 2016 once again brought the thorny issue back to the surface. Although many people are broadly familiar with the postwar history of violence in Ireland, the roots of the country’s internecine hostility with the UK, as well as the historical complexities of its relationship with its former motherland remain less known. This course seeks to bring those delicate nuances to light, always in the spirit of compassion, empathy, and understanding.
