Learn about complex history of the Irish troubles in this analytical and source based course. Emphasis is placed on student participation yet always in the spirit of compassion, empathy, and understanding.
The ‘Irish Question’ largely disappeared from public discourse after the signing of the historical Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which ended most of the violence of the Troubles. Yet the earth-shattering and unexpected outcome of the Brexit referendum in 2016 succeeded in bringing this thorny issue back to the surface once again. Although many are broadly familiar with the post-war history of violence in Ireland, the roots and complexities of the country’s internecine hostility with the UK remain less well-known. This course helps students learn to analyse and appreciate these delicate nuances, always in the spirit of compassion, empathy, and understanding.
